Happy New Years 2014!

Happy New Year Everyone!

I can't believe how fast this year has passed by! Everything like Christmas and New Years just crept up in the past few weeks. I really don't know where all the time has gone!

If I was to sum up 2013, it would be that this was the year I got baptised, worked part time as a pharmacist and continued studying pharmacy.

It's been a long time since Ada, a previous pastor and Sunday School teacher at our church encouraged us brothers to get baptised. Slightly over ten years later, we actually went through with it! I sometimes forget that I did get baptised, only because I've been a Christian for so long that I just keep thinking it was a while ago that I got baptised!

I also never thought I'd end up continuing studying pharmacy! I had a bit of a rough time studying a Bachelors of Pharmacy, and to imagine myself doing a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Pharmacy would be crazy!

In the first few weeks of doing it, I kept asking myself, what am I doing? I have no idea how I'm going to make it to the end of this, I want to quit! I ended up making it all the way to the end, and I'm so glad I didn't quit!

I also took a chance and went down to Taupo for a week to do some locum pharmacy work, and while initially anxious about it, I am extremely glad I went down for the experience!

I always get the feeling I didn't accomplish much in 2013, but when I think about it, a lot actually happened and I did actually accomplish quite a bit!

My main goal for 2014 is to start taking risks, going out there and getting things done, not shying away from a challenge. This will be the only way for me to grow and to move forward/upwards! I have to not be afraid of failure and to just keep trying. That's the first step in living a life without regret!

My blogging this year has been quite inconsistent, so you'll see it featuring in my New Year's resolutions for this year, so once again here we go!

- = Calum's 2013 New Years' Resolutions = -

(In no particular order, and roughly the same as last year)

1. Find a girlfriend (nothing to see here, same as before)
FAIL - A could do better here, and actually make an effort.

2. Make two new or closer friends
YES - I've gotten to know Joanna, Wei and Tsun Hei pretty well

3. Find a job
YES - I did regular locum work at the pharmacy I completed my internship at, which saw me working at least two days a week till the end of October. I do have to find another job now though

4. Choose what to study at uni and complete it
YES - I ended up choosing to study for a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Pharmacy and actually completed it against the odds!

5. Participate in some organisation such as a volunteer organisation etc.
FAIL - Didn't join any new group!

6. Join some cultural activity/group/social group
FAIL - Same as above!

7. Pick up the accordion again and start practising a bit more regularly
FAIL - Still haven't touched it all year!

8. Clean the house!
FAIL - The house is still a mess

9. Sign up for and take Chinese classes
FAIL - Didn't get around to doing it

10. Learn and practise another musical instrument more regularly
YES - Does the cajon count? I've been playing it this year as they need it for the English worship band

11. Sit a music theory exam
FAIL - Once again didn't do it

12. Get my full driver's license
FAIL - I did have one driving lesson, but the instructor pretty much told me the Mitsubishi Lancer we have would fail before I even sit the test as it is too boyracer-like!

13. Travel to at least one overseas destination, and one local destination outside of Auckland
PARTLY YES - Did not travel overseas, but I did visit Rotorua with the family early in the year, and went down to Taupo in November for a week to work

14. Give my baptism testimony in Chinese
FAIL - I gave the first sentence of it in Chinese, but due to time constraints and a few issues I had to do it in English :(

15. Get baptised
YES - Finally got baptised in Easter! About time!

16. Be more mature
UM - Possibly not...I'm not too sure!

17. Go for regular runs and try to lose the fat (maybe enter Round the Bays!)
YES - I'm going to say yes because I joined the gym a couple months ago and manage to go regularly for a month! I haven't been for the past two weeks, but Christmas is a very busy time ;)

18. Attend a fellowship at another church or visit another church
YES - I've attended a few Church Unlimited services as well as City Impact's Christmas Eve service which was cool to see how they did things. I didn't get a chance to attend a fellowship at another church though.

19. Build up Anbro!
PARTLY YES - We filmed a few weddings and a school Chinese performance. It was more or less the same as last year though.

So my overall score is 7/19 resolutions achieved = MUST DO BETTER.

OK, so now time for this year's New Years Resolutions!

- = Calum's 2013 New Years' Resolutions = -

1. Get a girlfriend (same as before!)
2. Get my full license
3. Get a full time job
4. Get another qualification
5. Go to the gym regularly and GET THAT SUMMER BODY
6. Travel to at least one destination overseas
7. Hang around more people my age
8. Find another social group or organisation to get involved with
9. Sit the HSK Chinese exam
10. Sit a music theory exam
11. Pick up the piano accordion again
12. Make another two more close friends
13. Blog more regularly!
14. Be more adventurous
15. Take greater risks/Step outside my comfort zone
16. Do not rely on others
17. Do not be as open about my feelings etc. i.e. BE MORE MANLY
18. Keep in touch with old friends and catch up with them more

The last few are quite obscure, but hopefully they'll all make me a stronger, more independent person! I may update this as time goes if I feel the need to, but anyway...

Bring on 2014!

New Years at the Bay

Last night we got together with a few other families from church to welcome in the New Year at Mission Bay. It was really a last minute decision, and we hadn't really planned it properly!

Originally the plan was to meet up for dinner, then hang out at Mission Bay and watch the Sky Tower fireworks at midnight from there. However, we ended up deciding to have dinner at home, then meet up at 8 and go to Mission Bay.

We ended up getting to Mission Bay by around 9.30pm. By then it was starting to get dark. We got to the park, then realised we didn't really have much to do!

We hung around the fountain for a while, being asked by strangers to help take photos for them.

It was starting to get a little cold, so we decided to do a bit of really show window-shopping, which wasn't really window shopping, considering most of the shops were restaurants! They were quite packed though!

Next thing you know, we were at Kiwiyo. We had a few samples before a few of the guys bought a cup.

I decided not to, as I'm on a tight budget now and wanted to save up for Burger King (I only had pudding for dinner after all!).

We started walking back down the road, towards Burger King when we found out...Burger King had closed early today! Nooooooo!!!

There were still two hours to go till midnight and we didn't have much to do, so we headed back to the beach. Aonghas and I went back to the car to grab a ball and a mat for people to sit on. We were parked further down the road, yet we couldn't see the Sky Tower from where our car was parked. The Sky Tower wasn't visible from the beach either. We were going to have to walk right around the bay to see the skyline.

Really good weather

The rest of the group met with us, and we walked along the road, around the bay and eventually found ourselves along this really long wharf.

By then it was about 20 minutes till midnight. We found a good spot on the wharf and waited in anticipation! It was a little awkward, with a few couples holding each other on either side!

Finally at midnight the fireworks went off and everyone cheered and celebrated!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Years 2013!

Happy New Year Everyone!

2012 has come to an end, and 2013 is here! Hopefully everyone had a great 2012, and if not, may (20)13 be your lucky number!

While I sometimes look back at 2013 and think hmmm...not much actually happened except work...I realise that a few events in 2012 overshadowed everything else.

The activity we did at our youth group last Friday night, where we had to list everything we were thankful to Jesus for made me realise a lot did happen last year, and I am truly grateful for everything that did happen!

Back to the few events that overshadowed everything though:
Hong Kong - It had been well over 15 years since I last went to Hong Kong, yet I still had very fond memories of the place and would often dream of going back. I wasn't let down, and had a great, albeit short time over there earlier in the year. A few hours in Singapore with Jireh was a bonus! There was a slight worry that we would lose our Hong Kong ID cards (with getting the $1000 the least of our concerns at that time!), but several months later we were granted our ID cards with the 'right to land' status which is better than nothing!
Becoming registered as a pharmacist - I've spent four years studying pharmacy at university, a year as an intern, and then some! I had to spend an extra year as an intern, failed the exam half way through the year, and was on the brink of quitting and wasting five and a half years' worth of work. Thankfully my family and a few friends, along with the new pharmacy I worked at for the last half of the year helped get me through, and what I was starting to think was an unobtainable dream, became a reality!

I haven't been too great with blogging this year, but I will try to do better next year! Just reading through my blog posts from previous years reminds me of why I do this - because I have a bad memory and I enjoy reliving old memories that may have been forgotten if I hadn't documented them!

So once again, here is a review of my New Years' Resolutions from last year, and how I did!

- = Calum's 2012 New Years' Resolutions = -

(in no particular order)

1. Find a girlfriend (pretty much cut and paste now, but hey it's the year of the Dragon, and 7 is a lucky number!)
FAIL - OK so I was off to a slow start, still recovering from the previous year, but if it's any consolation, I think I may have finally moved on!

2. Make two new friends or two new close friends
YES - I have made at least two new friends this year - Jen and Cham!

3. Become a registered pharmacist
YES! About time! I just don't have a job now...

4. Visit the gym a bit more often than in 2011
FAIL - Didn't end up joining a gym at all! I did start a fitness club with some members of my youth group, and went for weekly runs for a month or so before things got in the way!

5. Find another musical instrument to learn up to a grade 4-5 level
FAIL - Didn't get around to touching the accordion, let alone another instrument! I did buy a baritone ukulele and have been playing that since I can't seem to master the guitar! I did give the piano a go, and have been trying to play a few simple songs on that. In summary: MUST TRY HARDER

6. Buy a bass guitar, learn it properly and get the Oddfellows band going
FAIL - We didn't even manage to get our band together again this year! We'll have to get something ready for the first youth group of next year

7. Sit a grade 6 music theory exam (grade 6 at the very minimum!)
FAIL - With my sole focus being to pass my pharmacy registration exam, this slid under the radar a bit. With a bit more time and freedom in the New Year, I will finally make this a higher priority!

8. Follow a 365 day Bible reading plan
FAIL - I'm very ashamed of this! I just recently started this 'Experiencing God' programme at church where I have to complete a day's worth of work each day for 12 weeks, so hopefully this gets me into a good habit!

9. Have 3 completely new experiences in 2012 (i.e. do three things I've never done before in my life!)
YES - 1. Travel to Singapore
         2. Perform barbershop (and on radio!)
         3. Write and hand in a resignation letter.
(am I grasping for straws here? I'm sure I've had better experiences than that! I'll add as I remember them)

10. Find a new social organisation/group to be a part of
SORT OF - I wouldn't call it a social organisation, but applying to be a volunteer of World Vision is a start. I really want to get involved in some cultural group that will allow me to explore my Asian side more

11. Completely change my life (open to interpretation)
SORT OF - I guess it wasn't completely life-changing, but having to work at a new pharmacy in North Shore with different hours during the second half of the year meant not being able to attend church on Sundays for a couple months, and not being able to teach music for the other few months. It's not exactly life-changing, but it did take me away from my regular routine

12. Attend a proper ongoing Chinese class
FAIL - I just didn't have the time to focus on this. I will make it a higher priority next year!

13. Travel to another city/town at least five times
SORT OF - Let's see...Hong Kong, Singapore...that's probably about it.

14. Be happier with life (or just content if really struggling)
SORT OF - I'm still trying to make sense of different concepts of living a much more rewarding and fulfilling life, so it's a work in progress!

15. Pick up the piano accordion again, learn another song and triwith the brothers
FAIL - The accordion still sits in the corner of the lounge, covered by junk! During the week at work I'd always think, this weekend I'll pick it up and play again, but In ever got around to doing it! I will have to clean up the lounge to make it more accessible!

16. Buy less junk food/takeaways
SORT OF - Burger King being the only place to buy food near your workplace doesn't help, but at least I restricted myself to once a week, compared to what it was when I was working in the city! Now with no money coming in, I'll have no other option but to cut back!

So here are the results:

Fulfilled New Years Resolutions: 3
Failed New Years Resolutions: 8
Partially Completed New Years Resolutions: 5

That gives me a 18.75% success rate, which is a slightly lower than my 19% success rate last year.

I think I'm going to have to remind myself of what my resolutions are throughout the year this time and actually work towards them! Here's to a perfect 100%!

Here are my resolutions for this year!

New Years Dinner

To celebrate New Years Day, our family went to our favourite Mt Albert BBQ Noodle House in...you guessed it, Mt Albert!

This time we avoided anything spicy and had a few dishes such as braised hapuka, Indonesian fried rice. It was quite nice this time. I got full after a while and we hadn't even finished the fried rice!

I think I'm getting fat now. What a way to start the New Year!

New Years Blowover

I originally didn't have anything planned for New Years, but after a conversation with Chen, we got thinking, and ended up planning to have dinner followed by something else till midnight. We weren't too sure what we'd be doing till midnight but eventually we decided we'd go to this place that sells milk tea and hang out there till then.

Even though Aonghas was working till about 6.30, Chen, Rose, Diane, Hamish and I decided to meet up earlier to play a couple games of bowling till 8pm, when we had booked dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant.

Once again, competition was tense between Diane and me. I beat her at minigolf last time we met up. This time though she was wiping the floor at bowling! She won the first game and came second in the second game to Rose by one point!

My bowling game was not the best! It took me a while to get started and by the time I started knocking over a decent number of pins, it was too late!

After bowling, Diane left to go have dinner with...someone else...while we just drove down the road to the Vietnamese restaurant where we were going to have dinner. I had been there before, so this time instead of getting soup noodles I got a bowl of rice with chicken fillets (is that what they're called?).

We only had an hour to eat before the restaurant closed, but we managed to do it in 40 minutes!

Chen booked us a table at The Drinks Lounge, which is sort of like Momo Tea, or Hulucat Tea.

We drag-raced there...no not really but we got to the place early as well but our table was reserved so we had a seat, chose our drinks and then the guys indulged in a bit of ...24 o.O You know that game you played at primary school where you have to use four numbers and make 24 by adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing them? Some way to celebrate New Years' Eve, right?

They eventually made it through a deck of cards, and as soon as they were finished I jumped at the chance to play Love Jenga! It's like regular Jenga, except each block has a task or something for the person to do after they've pulled the block out of the tower. They were quite tame though, such as

'Say 'I love you' to someone of the opposite sex in another language'
'Let the person to the left of you look through your received calls log on your mobile phone'
'Call someone and say 'thank you' to them'

The first game didn't last too long after Hamish knocked it over, but the second game was so intense we forgot all about what was written on the blocks! Each time someone pulled a block out of the tower, we reckoned the next person would be the loser.

However, it just kept going and going and going until the tower was really tall! Eventually someone had to be the one to knock it down, and that person was...HAMISH!

We played one last game that Chen suggested, in which we paired up and had to write down five words that we associate with the word given and see how many words we have in common with our partner. That was quite an interesting game.

It was soon about ten minutes till midnight, and we couldn't see the Sky Tower from outside The Drinks Lounge, so we decided to all jump in Chen's car and drive towards the city as much as we could before the fireworks went off. Of course, we had to spot the Sky Tower first!

We were driving down Dominion Road and saw these people just standing on the side of the road, but couldn't figure out what they were looking at! We finally spotted the Sky Tower, but couldn't see the top of if or the fireworks shooting from it, as the clouds were low and we could only see changes of colour! Some anti-climax!

Chen continued to drive into the city, getting stuck in traffic down Queen Street. The street was partially closed off, and there was a lot of people around the place. There was a freaky-looking guy in a mask (I'm sure he's an Occupy Auckland protester) who was just standing casually on the side of the road, letting fireworks off!

We eventually made it back to Dominion Road, where our car was and we parted ways. We did stop at Burger King for a feed before heading home though, but as part of my New Years' Resolutions for 2012, I will try to make it one of the few times I'll be eating fast food this year!

Happy New Years 2012!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!

There are only two words I really need to say to describe how I felt about 2011:

GOOD RIDDENS!

Despite us winning the Rugby World Cup, me graduating and also participating in the Rugby World Cup, Aonghas turning 21 and....OK that's probably it...there wasn't much else to be too happy about.

Think about it...the Christchurch earthquake, the Japan earthquake, Rena...

I suppose it was a year that cruel people passed away such as Gaddafi, Kim Jong Un, and Osama Bin Laden.

Hopefully 2012, the year of the dragon will bring us much greater luck, peace and prosperity! Let's make next year a year of new beginnings and one that is even better than this one!

Now time to review my New Years' Resolutions:

- = Calum's 2011 New Years' Resolutions = -

(In no particular order...brace yourselves!)

1. Find a girlfriend (6th year I think 6 is a lucky number!)
FAIL - I did finally do something about someone after a long, long time, but it wasn't to be

2. Make two new friends or make two new close friends (i.e. get closer to them than before!)
YES - Rebecca and Eva have become two of my closest friends. I don't know what I'd do without Eva always being at the other end of a text, and Rebecca's craziness and the fact that she always seems to lose to me in challenges!

3. Keep my intern pharmacist job till the end of the year and become a registered pharmacist
SORT OF - I kept my intern pharmacist job, but I haven't become registered yet

4. Join the gym and at least get biceps! Abs are a bonus!
SORT OF - I did join the gym, but I'm pretty sure I'm flabbier than before!

5. Get my Full License
FAIL - Still on my restricted!

6. Buy a new car
YES - After the Nissan Pulsar (the first car I bought) died on us, we sought a new car, and I ended up contributing to buying a Mitsubishi Lancer!

7. Find and buy my dream phone
YES - Bought a Samsung Galaxy SII. That'll do for now!

8. Buy a new laptop
YES - Towards the end of this year after my terrible HP laptop finally died on me the night before my assignment was due, I converted to Sony Vaio

9. Make another short film with Aonghas
SORT OF - It wasn't entirely a short film, but we filmed a little bit for Aonghas' 21st video

10. Find a cause and support it (Open to interpretation!)
SORT OF - I did end up agreeing to make monthly contributions to UNICEF, and then to Aaron Ku, a missionary from our church. I'm probably going to cancel my contribution to UNICEF though.

11. Read the whole Bible!
FAIL - I have been slowly working through Genesis in Sunday School, but outside of that I haven't been as good as I'd have liked

12. Get baptised...if I feel I am ready
FAIL - Still not baptised, but maybe slowly getting closer to that moment

12. Sit a music theory/Chinese exam
FAIL - Self-explanatory

13. Get one of my music theory students to sit a music theory exam
SORT OF - Got my grade two music theory students to sit a mock theory exam. I guess that's as much as I could have hoped for

14. Decide what I want to do with my life after I (hopefully) complete my pharmacy internship
FAIL - Still haven't decided, but now I've got an extra half a year to decide

15. Grow some balls (that sounded wrong didn't it? Let me clarify - be more strict with my students and stop letting young girls walk all over me!)
SORT OF - I have been finding myself being a bit more stern when dealing with younger kids, especially my students. My patience has definitely been tested this year!

16. Find OLDER girls to hang out with (that also sounded wrong didn't it?)
SORT OF - I did have weekly catch-ups with two of my intern friends for a while, and did catch up with various friends from time to time. However, at church I'm still surrounded by younger girls. It might be time to look for other groups to hang out with!

17. Be more positive/optimistic, look more at people's strengths over their weaknesses, be appreciative of what I have and less jealous of others...you know all that good, happy stuff
SORT OF - I think I'm getting better! Maybe I'm setting my standards too high but I guess it's better to aim high and fall short

18. Do photo 365 (one photo a day)
FAIL - Completely forgot about this resolution!

19. Learn at least 3 new pieces on the accordion (as in classical pieces that require practice!)
FAIL - I don't think I've touched my accordion all year!

20. This should've come earlier but study Chinese and return to at least NCEA Level 3 Chinese level..and be more Chinese (throw that in as well)
FAIL - While I have attempted to learn Chinese in bits and bobs, I'm yet to return to NCEA Level 3 level!

So overall, the final count is:

Fulfilled New Years Resolutions: 4
Failed New Years Resolutions: 9
Partially Completed New Years Resolutions: 8

That gives me a 19% success rate, which is a -6% improvement over last year. I think it is time to make some changes and increase that success rate!

Here are my resolutions for this year!

- = Calum's 2012 New Years' Resolutions = -

(in no particular order)

1. Find a girlfriend (pretty much cut and paste now, but hey it's the year of the Dragon, and 7 is a lucky number!)
2. Make two new friends or two new close friends
3. Become a registered pharmacist
4. Visit the gym a bit more often than in 2011
5. Find another musical instrument to learn up to a grade 4-5 level
6. Buy a bass guitar, learn it properly and get the Oddfellows band going
7. Sit a grade 6 music theory exam (grade 6 at the very minimum!)
8. Follow a 365 day Bible reading plan
9. Have 3 completely new experiences in 2012 (i.e. do three things I've never done before in my life!)
10. Find a new social organisation/group to be a part of
11. Completely change my life (open to interpretation)
12. Attend a proper ongoing Chinese class
13. Travel to another city/town at least five times
14. Be happier with life (or just content if really struggling)
15. Pick up the piano accordion again, lean another song and trio with the brothers
16. Buy less junk food/takeaways

I will add to this list over the next few days as I come up with more!

Celebrating the Last Day of the Year

To celebrate the last ever day of 2010, some of us from our youth group got together at Westgate Cinemas to watch the latest Chronicles of Narnia movie, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. To be honest, I haven't been the most enthusiastic fan of the Narnia series, and so haven't really watched the first two movies of the series properly. Being in the cinemas though and watching this third movie in 3D though made me have to pay attention and it wasn't that bad! One character in the movie even looked like one of the boys at our church!

After the movie finished, we all got rides back to church where we had dinner, which consisted of pizza, KFC and takeaways! There was quite a bit so I was pretty full afterwards! We all just hung around talking to each other when Jenny arrived with a Pavlova for dessert!

Someone mentioned the Trusts Stadium and the athletics track being open to the public, so a group of us walked down there after dinner to just play around. I was too full to go running, so I just headed to the playground with some of the girls!

We were soon called back so we headed back to church where we went into the hall to play this game called 'The Appreciation Game'. We all got into groups and had to roll the dice to get through the course, while answering questions that required us to share a little bit about ourselves. It was interesting hearing what others had to say! There was even a spinning wheel which required you to share a fond memory of a particular person, depending on where the arrow stopped! I had to talk about my appreciation for my parents and for one of my neighbours in another round!

There were some questions on love, fond memories and other things. Andrew always seemed to get the deep questions, and always had a deep answer to reply with!

After the game ended, Gabrielle started off the sharing regarding the youth group this year. We then took turns talking about what we liked about youth group this year, which was nice to hear. Some talked about the performances we gave this year, such as the Mother's Day performance, Karvin's farewell and the Christmas play. Others talked about the random birthday surprises. Someone also brought up church camp and how they weren't allowed to stay up...WHEN WILL THEY LET IT GO?!?! (I'm kidding I don't mind I was following orders! haha).

It was also up to me to settle a score with Rebecca. Earlier in the week she challenged me to make her scream today, and so I tried during a supposedly scary part in the movie but it didn't work! She then got me back when she shook me and...I admit I let out a teeny weeny yelp! Well when we were leaving, I grabbed Joylynn's jandals, crept up behind her and tried to scare her but it didn't work!

So here's my punishment...

It was getting late, and so it was time to leave church. A few of us though were going to head off to Jireh's house to see in the New Year.

At Jireh's house we all had a bit to eat and had Sound of Music on TV (we gave in to Jenny) while we played Scrabble. I have to say I'm surprised at how fun Scrabble could be! I suppose it's more fun when you're with more people.

Phillip and I were on the same team, up against Hamish, Andrew and Ben on one team, and Jenny and Grace on the girls' team. At first it didn't look too good with us behind in terms of score.

We took a break right on midnight to welcome in the New Year. We used the countdown on TV and watched the fireworks that followed (on TV too). Hopefully it was live and not delayed! Jireh gave us all party poppers so we popped those and made some noise as we crossed into 2011!

To start off the year in style, Phillip and I overtook the girls (who had been leading the game of Scrabble for the majority of the time) and won! Wooo go guys!

The guys who were staying the night started playing card games, while the girls, Hamish and I left for home not too long after.

What a way to finish one year and start the other, with friends, Sound of Music and a game of Scrabble! Happy New Year everyone!
